Rohingya organizations held a seminar on the tragedy of the Rohingya Muslims on Monday entitled as “Persecution of Rohingya in Myanmar and Crimes Against Humanity” in Hall 23 of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland.
The organizations included the Arakan Rohingya Union (ARU), the Global Rohingya Center (GRC) and the European Rohingya Council (ERC).
The seminar was moderated by Abu Dhar Al Mana, the official of Maaraj foundation for Peace and Development.
At the beginning of the seminar, Amy Smith, executive director of Fortify Rights, spoke of her observations in Arakan and the Rohingya refugee camps, saying that campaign against them was coordinated and with increased violence.
In December 2016, Smith stated that she had documented Rohingya abuses and interviewed refugees in Bangladesh and concluded that the army had raped Rohingya women, burned people alive, burnt entire villages and prevented doctors and relief teams to the Rohingyas.
Smith called for a fact-finding commission to be set up, stressing that the Rohingya was in desperate need.
ARU President Dr. Wakar Uddin stressed that Myanmar’s repressive policies against the Rohingya Muslims led to poor humanitarian conditions and said that the government forced Rohingya to accept NVC cards to brand them non-indigenous citizens.
For his part, President of the GRC Mohammed Alam Yasin said Myanmar to stop the humanitarian violations against the Rohingya and the formation of a committee to find facts in this crisis, also called on the media to intensify attention to this issue.
Dr. Hla Kyaw, representative of the ERC, spoke of the humanitarian crisis faced by Rohingya since October 2016. He pointed out that the Myanmar government has set up commissions that are all flawed and unfair.
In spite of the shocking reports from Special Rapporteur Ms. Yanghee lee, they expressed their willingness to spread the issue and urged officials to take all necessary measures to restore the rights of Rohingya .
A documentary about the tragedy of the Rohingya Muslims produced by the Arakan News Agency was also presented during the seminar.
