Director General of Arakan Rohingya Union Appeals the Islamic Ummah of Great Britain for Stepping up Their Support for the Rohingya Cause
London. Director General of Arakan Rohingya Union, Dr. Wakar Uddin, addressed to the Muslim community of London in East London Mosque at the Friday Jum’aa prayer on June 19, 2015. Dr. Uddin provided the audience of over a thousand with the details of the situation on the ground in Arakan state in Myanmar and the latest development in Nay Pyi Taw with regards to Rohingya issue. “This is an issue that we, the Rohingya people, have been facing for over 50 years, and currently the ethnic policy of the Government of Myanmar and the persecution of Rohingya by the Myanmar officials and armed forces are spiraling out of control” Dr. Uddin stated in his opening remark. “There are major human right violations with large list of restrictions on Rohingya, the revocation of citizenship, the violence against Rohingya by Buddhist Rakhine rendering over 140,000 Rohingya in IDP camps, the voting and white card issue, the anti- Rohingya and anti-Muslim legislations in Nay Pyi taw, the boat people crisis at the Andaman Sea, and now the recent discovery of the mass graves of Rohingya victims of human trafficking in Thailand and Malyasia; before one issue can be addressed there is another; these are being deliberately created as a diversionary tactic to avoid addressing the core issue of basic human right and the citizenship issue’ he added.
Dr. Uddin has provided the international perspectives on Rohingya issue, particularly the relentless efforts by the US Government, the OIC Ministerial Contact Group and the Council of Foreign Ministers, the United Nations General Assembly, the United Nations Human Right Council, and efforts by numerous NGOs in Washington, New York, and Europe.
Dr. Uddin has also indicated that the Rohingya issue has already been brought up in United Nations Security Council once earlier, and efforts are being made to further advance the issue in the Security Council.
He asked the Muslim Ummah in United Kingdom and in other European countries to further engage with their respective governments and demand their government to act urgently on Rohingya issue because it is not only a political issue but it has now emerged as a grave humanitarian crisis where the lives of hundreds of thousands of people are being threatened. “Please act now to save a vulnerable Muslim population in Myanmar who are on the verge of extermination – save Rohingya before it is too late” Dr. Uddin stated.
